ABOUT
Rajuma Bey known professionally as Rathagod currently resides in Charlottle. Bey’s often narrative-driven paintings explore and define his personal experiences and outlook, as an African-American man and the values he developed from his Afrocentric upbringing. Bey believes much of modern African American culture is polluted with stereotypes, propaganda, and half truths. Bey feels pop culture and the media play a big role in how modern African American culture has been stripped and redistributed in a manner that doesn’t reflect us in the best way.
Bey intentionally avoids placing his work within any defined artistic category. He mixes aspects of graffiti with conventional figuration to create his introspective pieces. His paintings serve as pictorial hieroglyphics of contemporary African-American culture. Bey’s often provocative images also address how Black Americans can salvage what has been lost or destroyed in our culture.
